For over ten years, Tara Books has worked with women artists from a variety of indigenous Indian art traditions.
Many of these practices have their origins in the decorative designs that women create to beautify their homes. This kind of aesthetic activity is considered part of housework – but what about women artists who have emerged to paint in other contexts, beyond the household? What kinds of changes does this involve? As feminists, we are interested in exploring this trajectory, in the context of indigenous art. This short film is part of an exhibition that opened at the Book Building, Chennai in March 2014.
