“Alo.” Arayan Necip, Necip benim arkadaşım. Adımın kulağıma fısıldandığı günden beri arkadaşım. Ne zaman başım sıkışsa; yardımıma koşan, koca yürekli can dostum. Necip önce halimi hatırımı soruyor. Hatrı sayılır biriyim ama böyle esprilere hiç gerek yok. En iyisi, “iyi.” demek. Necip anlatıyor da anlatıyor. Atölyede çalışıyormuş falan filan. Canı çok sıkılıyormuş aman aman. Necipler sülalecek mobilya işiyle uğraşıyorlar, mesela bizim evdeki mobilyalar da onların atölyeden çıkıp gelmiş vakti zamanında.

“Sen de gelsene oğlum.” diyor, “çalışırız birlikte işte.”

“Çalışmak … Hımm …Birader, ben zor nefes alıyorum be. Ne çalışması? Üç kuruş için bi tarafımı yırtamam. Para veriyonuz, dimi lan ?”

Necip’in “Evet” demesiyle nergis çiçeklerinin sarışın kokusu çalınıyor burnuma.

“tamam. Oraya üç hafta da 600 lira yaz.”

            “Ne ?”

            “Yani geliyorum.”

Telefon kapanır kapanmaz, annem giriyor odama. Annem’in bakışlarından “Evden defol ! Temizlik yapıcam.” Yazısını okur gibi oluyorum. Anncak annemin elinde tuttuğu oda parfümünde “okyanus esintisi” yazdığına eminim.

                                                      *             *            *

Türkiye’nin başkenti Ankara, mobilyanınki de Siteler’dir. Siteler, iki bulvar arasına sıkışmış, navigasyonların girmeden önce defalarca “emin misiniz ?”  sorduğu kozmopol-it bir semttir. Cağnım semtimizin bir yakası mobilya atölyeleriyle, diğer yakası gündüzleri yıkılıp yerine sitelerin dikildiği gece kondularla örülüdür. İşte ben, siesel dönüşüme uğrayan yakadan atölyelere gidiyorum. Hem de çırak olarak… Heyt be ! Yürü de alem bir çırak görsün !

Kuşlar kahvaltısını yapmadan, horozlar ötmeden evvel çıkıyorum evden. Sitelere’i  hiç böyle görmemiştim.

Sorun yoktu bence.

“İyi” diyor Necip , “ Ben de orucum. Allah yardımcımız olsun. Birkaç güne alışırsın zaten. Ama ilk gün en beteri be kardaşım. Dikkat et, ustalar seni biraz zorlayacak.”

“Kim kimi zorluyo oğlum ? Biz ne günler gördük vız gelir tırıs gider …

“ben uyarayım da birader.”

Yukarı çıkıp Necip’in babası ve amcalarıyla selamlaşıyorum.

Bakkal başka hırdavatçıya, hırdavatçı anasının nikahına … haydi kırtasiyeyi anladık da tuhafiye neymiş be !

Siteler’in en önemli kuralını (kimseye güvenmeyeceksin !) unuttuğumu fark ediyorum. Emekçi demiş, bağrıma basmıştım. Ah ulan ah, çırakla dalga geçilir mi?!

Atölyede kimsecikler yok. Çatıya çıkan merdivende karşılaşıyorum beni sırtımdan hançerleyenlerle. Mola vermiş, boncuk gibi dilip dinleniyorlar. Namussuzlar! Görürsünüz siz …

Şahin de merdivendeki boncuklar arasında. Yumruklarımı sıkıp basamakları çıkıyorum. Ardımda bıraktığım her basamaktan gülüşme sesleri yükseliyor. Şahin’in karşısında duruyorum. Yumruk atılası suratındaki hain gülümsemeyi sakalının arkasına gizleyip “Buldun mu?” diye soruyor.

Cevap vermiyorum.

THE MOST WONDERFUL APPRENTICE OF SITELER*

The weather is extremely hot. Ankara is an oven and I’m roasting like a joint of meat. As the sweat flowing from my body fills the hole in my pillow much like in Kurtbogazı Dam, the days are slipping away like melted butter in a pan. There is nothing I can do. I can’t even drink the water to extinguish my fire. Because I am fasting. I don’t know if it is fasting that binds me to the bed as if I was chained. You know, they say it’s the devil who is chained in Ramadan… I am wondering if I am… Perish the thought!

This is not my dream summer. Definitely not. But I must do something and reach my “dream summer”. I should at least try. Otherwise, I will return to school as a heat-treated piece of meat crushed by regret when the summer is over.

My phone is ringing.

I answer it. The caller is Necip, Necip is my friend. Since the day my name was whispered in my ear, he’s been my friend**. My big-hearted dear friend who comes to my aid whenever I’m in trouble. Necip asks me how I am on the phone first. I’m a respectable person, but there’s no need for jokes like this. It’s best to say, “I’m fine”. Necip talks non-stop. He said he was working in a factory or something. He was very bored, very much. Necip’s whole family is engaged in the furniture business, for instance, the furniture in our house too was produced in their workshop at the time.

“Why don’t you come too, bro,” he says, “We’ll work together.”

“Work… Hmm… Dude, I’m breathing hard, how can I work? I can’t kill myself to make a dime. But let me think… Tell the truth, you pay money, right dude?”

After Necip replied “Yes”, the blond scent of daffodil flowers reaches my nose in all its splendor. Money means vacation after all. Vacation means the smell of daffodils… And tranquility… Tranquility means sun, sea, nature… Oh, how I yearn for the sea…

“How much?”

“200 per week.”

200 lira is not something to be underestimated at all. Pink-colored bus tickets cost 1 lira and 80 kurus. Green student tickets are 1 lira and 20 kurus. Being a student is not enough to buy a student ticket; a student card is required. You have to pay 15 liras for this too. There is no such unjust calculation even in Deli Dumrul‘s*** fairy tale.

“Well. Then just prepare 600 liras for three weeks.”

“What?”

“I mean, I’m coming.”

As soon as the phone is turned off, my mother enters my room. In my mother’s eyes I can almost hear her say, “Get the hell out of the house! I’m going to clean up.” But I’m pretty sure the air freshener my mom holds says “ocean breeze” on it.

                            *             *            *

Just as Turkey’s capital is Ankara, furniture’s is Siteler. Siteler is a cosmopol-it**** an district sandwiched between two boulevards, where online navigation repeatedly asks “are you sure” before entering. One side of our dear neighborhood is covered with furniture workshops, and the other side with shantytowns, which are demolished during the day and replaced by apartment blocks. Here I am going to the furniture workshops from the side that has undergone an urban transformation. Moreover, as an apprentice, way to go! What an apprentice!

I leave the house before the birds have had their breakfast and before the roosters have crowing. I have never seen Siteler like this. Adults flock to the streets to go about their business in the early morning, worrying about making a living. What about me, what am I going after?

Necip greets me at the door of the workshop. His first sentence is “Are you fasting?” I don’t know if I have sahur***** or not. I’m not hungry either, but this uncertainty makes you hungry instantly. When did we ever eat french fries with egg? I’m calling my mom directly. Yes, she says I’m fasting. And again, french fries with eggs… My perception of time changes according to the meal, not the calendar. Luckily, we didn’t eat spicy sausage. There was no problem, I think.

“Good then,” says Necip, “I’m fasting too. God help us! You’ll get used to it in a few days anyway. But the first day is the worst, bro. So, be careful, the masters will force you a little.”

So what? Let them push as much as they want, I’ve seen worse. I don’t give a damn!

“Anyway, I’ll warn you in advance bro.”

I go upstairs and greet Necip’s father and uncles. Then they introduce me to the masters. It is also beneficial for me to appear to the bosses. Thus, I give the message to the masters that “I own the place”. While thinking, “I can work comfortably now”, one of the masters says, “Take the broom, start working!”. I find this command very strange.

I take the broom in my hand as if it were my passenger car and use it with such force that I almost make old witches jealous. Dust and pieces of stone are running away from me. I will kill them; I will work like a machine. It’s like post-modern times… My cup of happiness is full… Until the broom was taken from me…

Necip briefly explains the things to be done. “Continuity is key in apprenticeship”, he says. I had to keep the place clean all the time, but at the same time, I had to not hinder the masters in any way. And I had to do the job perfectly.

“Look here Necip”, I say, “The salary you will give to the employee who can bend space-time is only 200 liras?”

“Don’t be kidding,” says Necip. Pointing at the masters’ missing fingers, “Don’t get too close to the woodworking machines. It’s not our job. Do whatever the master says, but don’t interfere. Hurry up! Good luck dude.”

Actually, I can’t say I wasn’t a little scared, moreover, I was hungry. To that, I must add thirst. I’m thinking about the money I’ll get and the vacation. The pieces of stone that I sweep look like sand castles on the beach. I am revitalized, both physically and spiritually. I get on my broom and continue to sweep the stones. As soon as we fill the sawdust into the sack, Necip and I carry it to the attic. Yet before we get back, the lower floor returns to its unswept state. I am the one who suffers the punishment of Sisyphus. But I don’t give up. I am a machine after all. I am making a mountain of sawdust on the roof, dreaming of my dream vacation. Not to mention the parts I loaded onto the truck and unloaded from it. Fortunately, one way or another, it’s lunch break.

I’m taking my first lunch break in my life, but everyone in the workshop is going out. I want to mingle with the herd, as a novice should, and thus overcome my timidity and inexperience. I join the queue of workers advancing as if fascinated. I feel like a true revolutionary. Together with my working comrades, I am ready to throw the arrogant bourgeois from their ivory towers. But strangely enough, the comrades go down to the basement. Before I could even ask Necip, “What’s going on?”, thunderous snores erupt in the twilight of the warehouse.

“What’s going on, bro? Why is everyone asleep? Are we on strike? Don’t tell me you didn’t pay the guys their salaries? Look, that’s my red line. Everyone will get their money’s worth, and that’s flat! Otherwise, I’ll just take that library and go.”

“Don’t talk nonsense bro. You know everyone is fasting. We are just resting during lunch break. Don’t wait, you also go and rest in a corner.”

I’m not saying another word. I set out to look for sturdy cardboard to lay on. But every cardboard in the warehouse is already covered with men’s bodies. I go up to the workshop and find that bubble wraps that we wrap the furniture in. I’m laying it out in a corner of the warehouse. But the bubbles burst as I lay on it. Those who wake up are just cursing, indiscriminately. I look at the clock and I, just like them… Half an hour has passed already.

When the lunch break is over, Şahin Usta calls me. He wants me to go to the hardware store to get supplies. I’m like Tommy who got his first assignment in GTA, but with one difference: This is Siteler, not Miami. I can neither write cheat codes, nor press escape when I get tired and rest. I can’t even take aspirin. However, as I get rid of the dust of the workshop and get fresh air, I have already made my health 125 percent in this task.

I go into the hardware store and ask for the materials. “It’s sold out,” he says. Wasn’t Master Şahin a carpenter? What will he do with paint and plaster? What was it that he wanted? Even the name is weird.

I reach the other hardware store, the man says, “Do you know Sercan Bakkal (Grocery Store)?” I don’t know. But luckily, he makes me know it. How strange, so, these things are also available in bakkal (the grocery store). Well… As I said… This is Siteler… Not a place to be underestimated at all… You never know what, why, how, where, when you will find it. Siteler crumples the five Ws like a used handkerchief and throws it aside. Here I am looking for that handkerchief.

The grocery store sends me to another hardware store, and the hardware store to another place, miles from anywhere… Stationery may be acceptable, but what do these materials have to do with haberdashery! If I had bought yarn from this haberdashery and had let the yarn go along the way I passed, I would have knitted a sweater according to Siteler’s big size. My brain is boiling in my skull. My dream of the perfect apprenticeship is crushed by the fatigue of my feet. Unfortunately, my first apprenticeship mission turns into that helicopter mission in GTA that I couldn’t complete. My hope is gone. I’m going back to the workplace now. Still, on my way back, I am stopping by Necip’s paint shop to consult.

“Master Şahin wanted drum dust and minaret shade. I’ve been searching but couldn’t find it. Where can I find them?”

“What?”

“Drum dust and minaret shade.”

“How long have you been looking for these?” asks the furniture painter with flecks of paint on his t-shirt.

“About two and a half hours, I think.”

The master painter rolls his eyes angrily and clicks his tongue.

“Tell that your master not to mess with you… He’s asking for trouble!”

I’m rushing out of the paint shop. I’ve been trapped. I realize that I forgot the most important rule of Siteler (don’t trust anyone!). I trusted him, after all, he was a worker, a laborer. Shame on him, would it be okay to make fun of the apprentice?!

There is no one in the workshop. On the ladder to the roof, I meet those who betrayed me. They are during the break, resting lined up like beads. Nasty bastards! All right for you!

Şahin Master is also there, among the beads on the ladder. Clenching my fists, I climb the stairs. Laughing sounds rise from every step I take behind me. “Did you find it?” he asks, hiding the treacherous smile on his face behind his beard.

I don’t answer. First, I look to my right (right is sunnah) and then to my left. All attention is on me. I roll up my sleeves like I’m wearing a long sleeve shirt. The stairwell falls into silence as I pretend to lick my arm from elbow to wrist. I clamp my right thumb between my middle and index finger and make a fist with my hand. And I pull my right hand out of my left hand, at great speed. My hand snaps like a whip. As soon as the snap sound ends, I say, “Here! This is drum dust.” Timing is very important. I do the same gesture with my left hand and say, “Take it too! This is minaret shade.”

I am so relieved… Even though I’m broke, six stars are flashing in the top left corner of my screen, and I am still neither wasted nor busted. But I miss my bed so much that…
